Black Beans
Black beans are hearty, earthy legumes that bring satisfying texture, deep flavor, and robust nutrition to bowls, tacos, chilies, salads, burgers, and soups. They’re affordable, versatile, and easy to batch cook or use from a can for fast meals.
Nutrition
One cup cooked black beans (~170 g) contains:
✓ ~15 g plant protein and ~15 g fiber for fullness and steady energy;
✓ Folate, iron, magnesium, and potassium in meaningful amounts;
✓ Antioxidant polyphenols (the dark color signals a higher content);
✓ Slow-release carbohydrates that support stable blood sugar.
Black beans deliver a powerful protein + fiber combo that helps make plant-based meals more satisfying.
Health Benefits
The fiber supports gut health and helps maintain healthy cholesterol levels. Iron contributes to oxygen transport, while magnesium and potassium support muscle and nerve function. Their polyphenols provide everyday antioxidant support.
Dried or Canned?
Both are excellent.
✓ Dried: Best texture control and most budget friendly. Soak for faster, more even cooking.
✓ Canned: Ultra convenient and consistent. Choose unsalted/no-salt-added and rinse well to reduce sodium and starchiness.
How to Prepare
- From dried (optional): Soak 6–12 hours, drain, then simmer gently until tender (45–75 minutes) or pressure-cook for speed. Salt toward the end.
- From canned: Drain and rinse. Warm with aromatics and spices or add straight to bowls, tacos, soups, and burgers.
- Flavor: Cumin, oregano, garlic, onion, bay leaf, chili, and a splash of lime or vinegar brighten dishes.
Digestibility Tips
Soak and rinse dried beans, cook until fully tender, and use spices like cumin, coriander, fennel, or bay. Rinsing canned beans well also helps.
Storage
Dried beans: Airtight in a cool, dark cupboard up to 1 year (older beans cook slower).
Cooked beans: Refrigerate in some cooking liquid and use within 3–5 days.
Canned beans (opened): Transfer with some liquid to a sealed container and refrigerate 3–4 days.
Can You Freeze Black Beans?
Yes. Portion cooked or rinsed canned beans (with a little liquid) and freeze up to 3 months. Thaw in the fridge or add straight to hot dishes.
What Do We Use?
At DAREBEETS, we use canned black beans for convenience. We choose unsalted cans and rinse well before adding them to bowls, chilies, tacos, and quick weeknight meals.
